Panel : ALTERNATIVE VIEWS ON DETENTION – AND HOW ART CAN CONTRIBUTE TO THIS

09 May 2023, SPUI25, Amsterdam

Over the years, not only crime but also the social view of punishment and detention has changed. For example, certain media framing can fuel a strong ‘us-versus-them’ feeling, and the humane aspect of prisoners is sometimes lost sight of. But how does someone end up in this situation? And does the architecture of prisons still fit with the current zeitgeist? During this programme, artists, scientists and a lecturer in Criminal Law will enter into dialogue with each other to examine the theme of ‘crime and punishment’ from different angles.

Participants:
  • Theo Tegelaers, director and curator at Stichting TAAK, Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • Arna Mačkić, architect at LA architecture studio, Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • Robert Glas, artist focusing on actors involved in law enforcement, Rotterdam, Netherlands
  • Ulrike Möntmann, scientist and artist, Amsterdam, Netherlands and Vienna, Austria
  • Malou Hamers, lecturer in Criminal Law at the University of Amsterdam, involved in the course Sanctions Law, Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • Gabriela Petralia (moderator), communications advisor at the Amsterdam Law Hub, part of the Faculty of Law at the University of Amsterdam, Netherlands
