Esma Bronkovič (*2000, AT), project participant from the Schwarzau prison in Austria, shares her lived experiences in rap songs, which she writes and performs herself. This medium offers her the opportunity to authentically express her inner world, connecting the conflict-laden interior reality of her consciousness with the external reality of prison. By sharing her experiences performatively, she addresses the psychological effects of incarceration and her internalised feelings of guilt towards her parents, provides insights into her religious belief system and engages the audience with her honest portrayal of the effects of imprisonment.
Her performance was recorded during the project realisation in 2022, and the research team worked successively on the visualisation and contextualisation of these recordings.
The research team submitted the video to participate in the WAVE Video Contest at the LisbonAddicitions2024 conference, where it was honoured with the WAVE Special Award for Creative Expression.
